Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. As a young girl, she was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety due to the word association. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. She joined at the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she would not be a good for the school. Ford was then able to apply to be a student in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford didn't complete her degree in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her debut on television on the show Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Her regular work in theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate began to gain attention for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
